ONLY two fixtures were able to beat the elements in the Wiltshire Senior League as snowy conditions swept across the county.

Shrewton United will be happy they were able to play as they were 3-1 winners at Wilts Calne Town.

The hosts took the lead after a defensive mishap from Scott Young’s side in the first half, much to the displeasure of the Shrewton boss “We lost to them (Calne) earlier on in the season at home and they are better than their results suggest,” said Young.

“They’re quite a good team, to be fair to them. We started quite brightly and had a couple of early chances.

“Our goalkeeper received a back pass and it bobbled when he went to clear it, so it spooned up in the air.

“Our defender then tried to head it back to him but it was a bit short and their striker managed to get on the end of it.”

Young’s side restored parity when Justice Walters scored from the spot in the first half, before gaining the lead in the second half through Charlie Utterson and sealing the win with a third shortly after.

“We haven’t been playing well in the last couple of weeks and it was a bit of a kick in the teeth at the start,” added Young.

“To be fair, we dominated the game. It was a good performance and I don’t think our goalkeeper has had to make a save in the game.”

The win meant they went top of the table, leapfrogging Marlborough Town Reserves, who did not play at the weekend, and the Shrewton manager fancies his chances as the season draws to an end.

“Obviously Wroughton are the team to catch as they have several games in hand but personally, I think our run-in is easier than theirs,” said the Shrewton chief “They have to go to Ludgershall Sports twice and play us so I think we stand a fairly good chance and, obviously, it is still in our hands.”

The only other game saw Melksham Town Reserves rout second-from-bottom Pewsey Vale Development 5-0.
