LOWER Stratton will have to settle for a point after they played out a 10-goal thriller with Haydon Wick this weekend.

The two sides were separated by 15 points prior to the clash, with the hosts sitting pretty in second place in the Swindon & District League Division One league table.

Despite their league position, it was the away side who held a 3-2 lead at the break but Stratton demonstrated why they are enjoying a successful campaign as they came back to draw 5-5.

Jamie Saunders was a hat-trick hero for the hosts while Tom Hunt and Gavin Kay also notched.

Alan Spring was happy with how his side performed over the course of the match and gave credit to Haydon Wick for their performance.

“You never know what you’re going to get week in, week out. Division One is a good league this year,” said Spring.

“There are so many teams that might not be so good one week and play a totally different game the next week.

“We weren’t too sure what to expect from Haydon Wick, I said to the players they are only a couple of spots below us really.

“We had to go into the game at 100 per cent and we did but we still ended up having five goals scored against us.

“They were cracking shots from outside the box, and they all appeared to go under our keeper who was well miffed he let in five goals, but that happens.

"The amount of times their defence cleared the ball off of the line. Their defence were totally committed and their keeper made some very good saves.

“It isn’t like we didn’t have chances, but they took more of their opportunities than we did.”

Sport 4 Pinehurst ramped up the pressure on Lower Stratton after their 4-1 win over Moredon moved them to within a point of the league high-flyers.

Wroughton Reserves also picked up all three points in a 5-2 triumph over Swindon, who are one goal away from conceding 100 this campaign.

Core Construction were unable to build on their 1-1 draw at home with Lyneham last time out as they collected another point in a 0-0 stalemate with Stratton Juniors, who are now in fourth place. In the Premier Division, Village Inn picked up all three points in an emphatic 8-2 win at the expense of North Swindon WMC.

Bassett Bulldogs also registered a win as they saw off hosts Spectrum in a 2-1 victory.

Swindon Centurians were left empty handed as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Ramsbury.

The final fixture was league-leaders Dears Leap who put five past Sportz Central as they moved two points clear at the top of the table.
