SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb was relieved to avoid a potential banana skin and return to winning ways in Southern League Division One South and West.

Webb’s side ran out 3-1 winners over bottom-of-the-league Bridgwater Town but suffered an early scare when Harry Horton opened the scoring for the visitors in the eighth minute with a 30-yard screamer.

However, Marine regrouped and Brad Hooper side-footed home Jon Else’s cross in the 29th minute to restore parity before second-half strikes from Joe Shephard and Josh Parsons secured a first win in five to the relief of Webb.

“Ultimately, today was about winning a game,” he said.

“We’ve had a difficult run of three games, playing Salisbury, who are a very good side, Hereford last weekend and fair play to Bishops Cleeve, they were better than us on the day.

“These games, when you play a team who are rock bottom, are never easy and they’re always going to have a scrap and try to get something out of the game.

“They scored a great goal to go in front but we managed to respond with three goals and win the game.

“I had three players in the centre of midfield and how we haven’t got any pressure on the ball to stop that shot, I don’t know.

“I’ll take any sort of win, when you play the bottom sides, there is always a shock in our league every weekend and fortunately, it wasn’t us.

“We’ve got a cup semi-final (against Calne Town in the Wiltshire Senior Cup) on Wednesday now to look forward to and then we have got a very difficult game next Saturday at Winchester.”

Marine lost striker George Reid to Didcot Town at the tail end of last week, with the forward scoring a free-kick in their abandoned game with Hereford on Saturday.

When asked if he was going to look for an immediate replacement, Webb replied: “We’re going to keep an eye out, but it is finding someone of the right calibre at this stage of the season.

“I’m going to have a little look and if we can get someone, I will.

“I was disappointed to lose George, I didn’t want him to go but he has been guaranteed first-team football every week there and that is what he has gone back for.

“I like George, he has done well for me and I wish him every success back at Didcot.”
