OLD Town United roared into the Swindon Advertiser Cup final after they bagged a magnificent seven goals in their semi-final success over Haydon Wick.

Chris Wood’s Division One title chasers will now take on Premier Division leaders and cup holders Tawny Owl in the decider at the end of the season.

Ashley Bragg and Aaron Williams got two goals each in Old Town’s 7-1 triumph at the weekend, with Chris Reade, Jesse McGowan and Alex Hammond also on target. Lee Gratton got Haydon’s sole reply.

Manager Wood said: “It was a fantastic result. It’s what we set out to do at the start of the season as everyone wants to get to the cup final.

“During the first 10 minutes, it was a 50-50 game, but after we took the lead, we were pretty comfortable.

“It was 4-1 at half-time so we were well in control – they were down to 10 men too as they’d lost a man through injury. A lack of numbers did hurt them but I think we expected to beat them going into it anyway.”

Wood admits his side will be underdogs in the final against Tawny Owl, who have won every game they have played in all competitions this season, although he says they will go into it without fear.

An upset there could potentially give Old Town a second piece of silverware of the season as they currently second in the Division One table, level on points with leaders Lyneham but with three games in hand.

“It’s looking very strong for us at the moment and a possible double is what we were hoping for when we got everyone together at the start of the season,” added Wood.

“It’s been a great season so far and everything is going well on the pitch so we just have to keep going now.

“Tawny Owl are a very fine team – I don’t think they’ve even drawn a game yet, let alone lost one, so that shows how good they are.

“We will be big underdogs but it’s a cup game over 90 minutes so anything can happen. I think we are the best equipped team over the two divisions to beat them so will just see how it goes.”

Elsewhere, Sport 4 Pinehurst moved within one point of the top of the Division One table with a 5-1 romp at Chiseldon, while Lower Stratton are a point further back in fourth as they saw off visitors Marlborough Reserves 2-0.

Bottom club Swindon AFC fell 3-1 at Core Construction, while Wroughton Reserves triumphed 3-0 at Moredon.

Tawny Owl maintained their 100 per cent record at the top of the Premier Division table with a 4-2 success at Sportz Central, although Bassett Bulldogs remain level on points in second after their 2-1 win at home to Village Inn.

Basement boys Spectrum went close to claiming just a second league win of the season before going down 5-4 at home to Swindon Spitfires, while Swindon Centurians won 4-2 at FC Dorcan.
