HIGHWORTH Town manager Jeff Roberts was delighted with his side's superb comeback as they came from two goals down against Salisbury to book their place in the Wiltshire Senior Cup final with a 4-3 victory.

The Hellenic League Premier Division side found themselves 2-0 down at half-time against the Southern League Division One South & West promotion hopefuls at Melksham Town’s Oakfields ground.

In the second half, in-form Kieron Gleed popped up with a quick-fire goal to kick start the fightback.

Midfielder Jon Davoile then levelled proceedings with his fourth goal of the season.

However, Highworth fell behind again when defender Lewis Brown put the ball into his own net.

Luckily for the Worthians, Ash Edenborough was able to restore parity late on with a scruffy effort in the 86th minute before Highworth got their noses in front through Luke Cousins, who sealed the comeback win in dramatic fashion.

Roberts was delighted with how his side battled through adversity to set up a final with local rivals Swindon Supermarine at the end of the season.

“We were always going to be the underdogs and we knew it was going to be tough,” said Roberts.

“We didn’t know what side they were going to put out against us. I said to the players: 'It was going to be similar to what we did against Flackwell Heath.'

“I decided that if we were going to play football, we should play it high in their half. In the first half, we got caught out and punished.”

After enduring a costly first half, Roberts reiterated to his players to play to their strengths in the second period.

Following his team talk, Roberts believes his side more than warranted their place in the final, which will be held on date yet to be confirmed.

“I just thought there were a couple of occasions where we overplayed in our own half. They’re a good side, we couldn’t afford to make mistakes," said Roberts.

“We got the players in and calmed them down a little bit. At the end of the day, we just needed to be on our toes and be a little bit more direct.

“We were very quick on the break so when we did get forward, we did cause them some problems.

“After we scored early in the second half, we upped our tempo and were back in the game.

“We knew they could come back at us in the last four or five minutes so fair play to the boys, they worked hard. “Going on the second-half performance, I think we thoroughly deserved to win the game."

Roberts will now turn his attention back to league action as Highworth head to Ascot United on Saturday afternoon.
