HOLY Cross Catholic Primary School pupils reached the regional finals of the ESFA Danone Nations Cup, the English leg of the world’s biggest football tournament for 10-12 year-olds.

The girls side progressed through the county knockout rounds for the right to take on the Cornwall, Devon and the Channel Islands.

Deputy head Robin Christian said: “Reaching this stage has been a superb effort from a school with a rich tradition of developing girls’ football.

“Actually qualifying for the county finals was an accolade in itself, having beaten the best of Swindon and then to win the finals against the best in Wiltshire was the icing on the cake."

The achievement continues a tale of success for Holy Cross, who have won a string of league and cup titles in the last eight years and consistently represented Swindon in the county finals.

Christian added: “We have children with family connections from Ireland, India, the Philippines, England, Ghana, Poland and Kenya and we’re immensely grateful to Pat O’Driscoll from Matt Fiddes Martial Arts for the kind sponsorship of brand new football kits.’’
