THE Wiltshire Sunday Cup final ended in disaster for AFC Gas as they were beaten 9-0 by The Dursley Arms.

The Chippenham & District League side made a flying start to the game and soon found themselves 4-0 up within the first half an hour.

Going into the break, Mark Tring’s troops were 5-0 down and the second half was no different as the Sunday League Division One outfit conceded another four goals.

“It was a very disappointing result. I don’t think the lads deserved to lose 9-0 but all credit goes to Dursley Arms because they were fantastic,” said Tring.

“I’m just bitterly disappointed. We didn’t start particularly well, they got a goal really early and by half-time, it was 5-0.

“It's always hard to get that back but we conceded sloppy goals and it was an uphill challenge after that.

“They were a very good team and once you were down against a team like that, it was tough going.

“We fully believed we could come out victorious but on the day, they were the much better side.

“We just weren’t at the races that day for whatever reason.”

Following a readjustment at the interval the Gas manager admits he did see a slight improvement in his side, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the heavy scoreline.

“I said to the players that they had to fight through to the end in the second half of the game," he added.

“We changed the system and formation to be a little bit more attacking and get a couple of early goals in the second half.

“The second half, we came out and for the first 20 minutes, I thought we had a really good go at them.

“They got the ball down, got it wide and passed it more so we did start well in the second half but it just wasn’t to be.

“We still have the league to challenge for. We still have three more matches, so we need to forget about this result and move on.”

Meanwhile, in domestic action, Division One’s Deers Leap picked up their third win of the season with a 4-2 win over Penhill United.

FC Walcot also wrapped up all three points with a 6-3 home win over bottom-of-the-league Jovial Monk.

Division Two only had two fixtures this weekend, with Cleeve Tech hosting Chilli Shak and Woodlands Edge making the trip to Fairford Town Sunday.

Cleeve Tech pinched a narrow 3-2 home win, while Woodlands Edge were slightly more convincing as they recorded a 9-0 victory.

In the third tier, Crown couldn't make the most of home comforts as they lost 3-1 to Purton Freshbrook.

Coleshill Youth stretched their unbeaten run to 14 in Division Four with a 7-2 win at home to Chisledon Sunday.

There were 19 goals from the three Division Five fixtures this weekend as the majority came in Highworth Town Sunday’s 11-1 win away to Sevenfields United.

Cricklade Park Sunday also contributed significantly to the haul with a 6-0 home win against bottom-of-the-league Swindon Rovers.
