MICHAEL McNally has set his sights on taking the final six points on offer to his Shrivenham side this season as he looks to build a springboard for success at Barrington Park next term.

Shrivenham host Letcombe on Saturday and then champions Fairford Town on Easter Monday in their final two matches of the Hellenic League Division One West season.

Although they can finish no higher than seventh in the table even if the targeted two more wins are achieved, maximum points would cap an excellent end to the campaign for Shrivvy.

McNally’s men had been on a run of four straight wins and eight games in a row in the league without defeat before going down to a last-gasp 2-1 loss at second-placed Hook Norton on Wednesday night.

Manager McNally hopes his side can quickly atone for that result this weekend as he is eager to lay some solid foundations for an assault on something special next season.

“We have been playing well and it was eight unbeaten in the league before Wednesday night. We’re in really good form and I couldn’t be happier with the lads and the way they are playing,” said McNally.

“We will just carry on what we have been doing. We have only got two games left and we’d like to finish with two wins, if we can.

“I have been in charge for a couple of years now, we have put a decent side together and they’ve massively improved in that time.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with how the lads have progressed and I think next year will be a big year for us – I’d like to think we will able to try to challenge for promotion.

“We were outstanding on Wednesday and it was just a few lapses in concentration that cost us. The lads were devastated at the end, it was like they’d lost a cup final, but I couldn’t fault the effort.

“If they hadn’t turned up and we’d got beaten easily, then there would be issues. It wasn’t like that, we were unlucky and hopefully we can put it right on Saturday now.”

Kias Bonner-Shea and Jamie Prictor both missed the midweek clash against Hook Norton due to illness but McNally is hoping to welcome them back into the squad at the weekend.

New College also play their penultimate game on Saturday and are at home to second-from-bottom Tytherington Rocks, while it is the final fixture for Purton, with Justin Miller’s men rounding off their season when they travel to Cheltenham Saracens Development.

Champions Fairford continue their promotion party away at Milton United, with Gareth Davies’ side also into the semi-finals of the Hellenic Supplementary Cup after a stunning 8-2 success over Henley Town in the last eight on Wednesday night.

Ben Saunders was twice on target in the first half at Cinder Lane, with Levi Cox also on target, but Fairford only led 3-2 at the break.

However, Davies’ side ran riot in the second half and Dan Drewett and Josh Morse soon got in on the act before Cox got his second just after the hour mark.

Fairford were not done there, though, and there was still time for Jason Milhench and Sam Ockwell to hit the net before the final whistle.
