SWINDON Supermarine chief Dave Webb was left feeling deflated after his troops slipped to a 1-0 defeat away at Shortwood United.

The result has seen them slip to seventh-place in the Evo-Stik Southern League standings in what was a disappointing display away from the Webbswood Stadium.

While the top five was the aim for Webb, the Supermarine manager admits the league table doesn’t lie.

“The pitch was very hard and very bobbly. Again we have had the opportunity to keep our season going and we haven’t taken it,” said Webb.

“Our performance was lacklustre and lacked quality today. We got what we deserved, which was nothing.

“We didn’t close the gap (on fifth-place) and we drop another place in the table. I think it probably shows where we are at.

“Our inconsistency is there for everyone to see. You can’t go from being one of the best footballing sides in the league to delivering a performance like that.

“Our league position doesn’t lie, that is where we should be. Clearly we aren’t a top five side at the moment.

“We will have to consolidate and see if we can finish the season on a high.”

Supermarine will have the perfect chance to rectify their below-par performance when they host Wantage Town on Easter Monday.

“Shortwood scrapped it out and we didn’t have enough about us to deal with that,” added Webb.

“We are too inconsistent and we need to improve. We are where we are, we have to pick ourselves up and try and win.

“It is our final home game of the season. One thing is for sure, I’m not going to be happy if we turn up on Monday and we don’t perform.

“They deserve that. I can only apologise to the supporters who came to Shortwood, we had good support and we let them down.

“We should have gone about our work in a much more professional manner, with more urgency and we just didn’t.

“I think I know what I need to do in terms of next season. If we want to make an effort to get out of this division, we can’t have performances like today.”
