SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb was thrilled with his team’s performance after they eased past Wantage Town 5-0 in their final home game of the Southern League Division One South & West season.

It took just 15 minutes for Marine to give something for the home supporters to cheer as Ryan Campbell volleyed them ahead.

That was how it stayed until four minutes into the second half when Webb’s troops doubled their lead. This time it was Joe Selman who was on target as Marine put themselves firmly in the driver’s seat.

Ten minutes later, two became three as Selman doubled his own tally for the day with a smart finish after beating two visiting defenders.

Connor Waldon made it 4-0 before Selman completed an impressive hat-trick as Supermarine completed their rout.

The result comes after a 1-0 defeat away to Shortwood United on Saturday and manager Webb was delighted to see his side make amends for the poor performance.

“We were disappointed on Saturday. It was difficult for us and we didn’t adapt to the conditions well,” he said.

“Monday was a totally different story as we played the way we are capable of. We probably could have scored a few more goals, in all honesty.

“Sometimes it’s a joy to watch when the players pass and move the ball in the way they did.

“It was a great performance and it’s moved us back up to sixth, five points behind Evesham, which is a bit of a shame with only one game to go now.”

While their play-off ambitions will be unfulfilled this season, Webb can take some comfort from the fact they put on a show in their final outing at the Webbswood Stadium before the summer break.

“It’s a nice way to finish in front of our own fans,” added Webb “In the first half, we had a lot of possession and some decent chances but we didn’t make them count, we just didn’t pick the final pass or get the right finish.

“In the second half, we were a bit more dominant. I don’t know whether or not Wantage tired, but by the end, it was a really convincing win.”
