FAIRFORD Town rounded off their Hellenic League Division One West title-winning campaign in fine fettle as they dispatched local rivals Shrivenham 5-2 at Barrington Park.

Despite the game having a total of seven goals, none of them came in the opening 45 minutes.

However, the first half wasn’t without its talking points as Ben Mitchell was sent off for the hosts after her handled the ball outside the area.

Ryan Stanners was on hand to break the deadlock when Levi Cox squared the ball and the former Highworth Town man had no issue slotting home.

Michael McNally’s Shrivvy hit back before Josh Morse restored the visitors’ lead and Ben Saunders’ header extended the advantage.

Shrivenham responded from a corner before Saunders headed his second of the game and Dan Reynolds wrapped up the win to ensure that Fairford finished 11 point clear at the top.

Manager Gareth Davies said: “That’s it now and we’ll take that.

“After going down to 10 men so early, I thought we did very well. We dealt with being a man down well.

“The lads in front of him worked their socks off and in the second half, going down the slope, I thought we did very well.

“Overall, it’s been a very successful season and the players have been immense for us this season.

“It doesn’t matter what 11 start, they can all win games.”

Fairford’s season is not over yet, with a Hellenic Supplementary Cup semi-final against Tuffley Rovers on Thursday before facing Cadbury Heath in the Gloucestershire FA Challenge Trophy the following week and Davies would love to sign off the campaign with more silverware.

“We’re in the semi, so we’ll try our best to make it into the final,” he added. “We won’t hold back. Depending on availability, we’ll try and put out our top squad because there is no point getting to the semi and not trying to go on and win it.

“It would be nice to get the treble, I’ll take that. If someone had said at the start of the year, you’ll win the league, be in the cup final and be in with the chance of making a second, I would have bitten your hand off.”

Meanwhile, New College finished 13th after suffering a 2-1 final-day defeat at Abingdon United.
