IT WAS a very happy Easter for Highworth Town Sunday as they sealed the Swindon Sunday League Division Five title with a hard-earned 2-0 win over nearest rivals Purton Red House.

Although Purton manager Peter Ockwell was left deflated after the defeat, he praised the visitors for making life difficult for them.

“We are disappointed not to have won the game but we have to give Highworth credit for making it as hard as possible for us,” he said.

“I’m slightly gutted that we dropped points earlier in the season. That is one of the reasons we weren’t able to push Highworth all the way until the final game of the season.

“But I am happy with the progress we have made because this was only our second season as a team.

“We know what mistakes we made and we are hoping to learn from it for next season.”

Division One leaders Greyhound further enhanced their title credentials with a thumping 15-0 win over Jovial Monk. With two games remaining, the leaders are four points clear of second-placed AFC Gas, who have a game in hand.

Earlier, Deers Leap wrapped up all three points in a 4-3 away win at Penhill United on Thursday night.

There were only two fixtures in Division Two, with the first seeing DH Fitness come out on the wrong side of a 5-2 scoreline against Cleeve Tech.

The other wasn’t quite as high scoring as Woodlands Edge were narrow 2-1 winnners at home to Your Sport Swindon.

It was high-fives all round in Division Three as AFC Cricklade and Willowgreen Hotspur both put in five-star performances.

The former stuck five past Purton Freshbrook without reply, while Cricklade had much more resistance as they narrowly defeated Crown 5-4 at home.

There were nine goals in Division Four as third-placed Rudis were 2-0 winners at home to PSV Swindon.

Swindon Athletic had earlier been far more convincing in their midweek game as they wrapped up a 7-0 win over visitors Chiseldon Sunday.
