GREYHOUND are celebrating doing the double following their 10-0 success in the Knockout Cup final at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground.

Having been crowned Swindon Sunday League champions last month, Dave Hawkins’ side’s final assignment of the campaign was a battle with Division Two team Cleeve Tech for league’s premier cup.

And while Cleeve Tech fought gamely throughout, Greyhound raced into a 3-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes and never looked back.

By the time the half-time whistle sounded, the Division One winners, who lost in the third round in the Wiltshire FA Sunday Cup to eventual champions The Dursley Arms, were five goals to the good, with the 10-0 rout completed by full-time.

Rory Sproule led the Greyhound charge with four goals, while Glenn Armstrong bagged a hat-trick. Dave Slattery, Dave Gee and Steve May made up the remainder.

“You can’t take too much enjoyment from winning a cup final 10-0,” Greyhound manager Hawkins said. “We went out and did our job and treated them with respect.

“Cleeve never gave up, they battled all the way until the end and played the game in the right spirit.

“They beat some good teams to get to the final – including Deers Leap – so they are a good team.”

Despite not taking too much from the result itself, Hawkins was pleased that his side were able to complete the double.

“At the start of the season, our aim, like any year, is to win the league,” the manager said.

“We did that and now we have won the cup too, so you have got to be happy.

“We had a bit of a celebration after the game on Sunday, then we will have a day in Cardiff next month before our end-of-season do in July when we get everyone together to sign on.

“The aim next season is to win the league again and anything else is a bonus.

“But we know that it will be tough. You have got (AFC) Gas, Walcot and ourselves and there isn’t much between any of us, so it will be a good battle again.”
