TAWNY Owl manager Anthony Pascarella has challenged his troops to go one better next season by topping their second successive double in the Swindon & District League with a treble in 2017-18.

Having already been crowned Premier Division champions with a perfect record for the second year in a row, Tawny made it back-to-back doubles on Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Old Town United in the Swindon Advertiser Cup final at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground.

Tawny missed out on a completely unblemished season, however, with the only match they failed to win of the 28 games they played being the final of the Wiltshire Junior Cup against Luxol St Andrews in April.

That loss acted as motivation for Saturday’s contest in Royal Wootton Bassett and will fuel the fire in Pascarella’s side to achieve an even bigger feat next season.

“We’re really happy with the outcome of the season after losing in the final of the Wiltshire Cup but definitely the target for next year is to win all three,” said Pascarella.

“We were disappointed with the Wiltshire final because if we had finished with 11 men, I am pretty confident we would have won.

“I think we will all stay together for next year and hopefully we can bring in a couple more additions to try to be even stronger.”

Tawny’s quest to win a fourth Adver Cup in five years got off to the dream start as Jack Allan headed them in front against Division One side Old Town from a corner with just six minutes on the clock.

Kenny Hawkins was then felled in the United box shortly afterwards, with Lewis Page slamming home the resulting penalty to double the advantage inside 10 minutes.

Godfrey Chlanga gave Old Town hope midway through the half with a crisp strike from the edge of the box but Tawny needed less than two minutes to restore their two-goal cushion as Hawkins bundled home from close range.

Pascarella’s troops moved further clear before the break when Lewis Waldon chased Allan’s ball through to rifle past keeper Chris Wood.

After an action-packed first half, just a single goal arrived in the second 45 minutes and it came the way of Tawny on the hour mark as Richard Gee slammed home from Allan’s knockdown to complete the rout and seal a second straight league and cup double for Pascarella’s men.

“We didn’t play that brilliantly but we’re really happy with the outcome. Old Town did well and I thought they played some good football, so fair play to them,” added Pascarella.

“It was a professional performance – the boys always score. We have got plenty of confidence that people will get goals, we are strong physically and mentally, and we have got experience.”

“We thought it was won on the sidelines by half-time but we didn’t tell the players that as we wanted to make sure they finished it off.

“It was more of a team effort than any one player standing out. Everyone fought well and battled well. I am happy with the outcome.”
