WROUGHTON were able to wrap up a first league and cup double in the club’s history with a 3-1 win over Shrewton United in the Fountain Knockout Cup.

Mark Love’s troops had already sealed the Wiltshire League Premier Division last month, but finished the year on a bigger high following their cup final win.

Shrewton finished six points behind Wroughton in second-place, but despite this they took an early lead within the first two minutes of the game.

Mark Love’s side were able to steady themselves and drew level in the 15th minute of the contest when James Turner slotted home from nine yards.

The teams went into the break level, but it was the champions who would land the next telling blow when Rickie Saunders put his team ahead for the first time.

Both teams were then reduced to 10 men after an altercation between the two sides, Dan Cole was the man who saw his afternoon cut short for Wroughton.

This was not to disrupt the troops too much as Shane Hibbert wrapped up the win in the 86th minute with his 30th goal in 17 games.

“It wasn’t a good start to be fair, but then we managed to consolidate and get ourselves back on the front foot,” said assistant manager Paul Bowden.

“We were slightly the better side but then it was more even in the second half.

"After going 2-1 up our goalkeeper pulled off some great saves to go 2-1 up, but then we sat back a bit and they pushed more forward.

“It was never a dirty game but there was a bit of a skirmish and the linesmen saw two of the players putting their heads together.''

Assistant manager Bowden admits it was a special day for the club and the management team, who grew up in the village.

“It’s been a memorable season and the players have deserved what they have got,” he added.

“With all of the management and some of the players coming from Wroughton, it was a great day for the club.

“I’ve been surprised with how well the team have done because we had to bring some people in, it is just unfortunate we can’t go to a higher step.

"We are all ready to go again next season and be competitive.”
