SWINDON Town Ladies may have lost their final match of their FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division campaign, but the margin of the defeat means they are unlikely to be relegated.

The 2-0 reverse against basement side Queens Park Rangers at the County Ground ensured that Steve Robertson’s finished second from bottom due to their superior goal difference.

And with Forest Green Rovers withdrawing from the league earlier in the campaign it is likely that only one side will be relegated this term.

“From what I have been told, only one team will go down,” Robertson said. “Our aim this season was to stay up and it looks like we have done that.

“Of course, it was disappointing to lose our final game of the season, but there is so much that we can take from this year.

“We should find out for definite over the next week or so, but it does look like only the bottom club will go down.”

Town ladies went into the match against QPR knowing that to avoid finishing bottom they could not lose by a margin of nine or more goals.

The West London side took the lead in the 43rd minute when Joanne Blodgett tapped the ball home from close range.

After the interval, the visitors needed just five minutes to double their advantage when Juliette Denny drilled the ball home from long range.

“I think we were our own worst enemy,” Robertson said. “I think if we had turned up then we would have won the game.

“It was lovely to play at the County Ground – it was spot on. We really appreciate being allowed to play here.

“It would be great if we could play our games here, maybe down the line we will be able to.”

Despite the fact Town are unlikely to be relegated, Robertson bemoaned the fact that there were far too many breaks throughout the campaign.

“We had to wait two weeks to play this match and there have been times this season when we haven’t had a game in eight weeks,” Robertson said.

“It was ridiculous because we went six weeks, then three and then two weeks between matches – we have even had midweek matches.

“We need the continuity of playing matches and that is something that we are going to have to look at.”
