FAIRFORD Town began life as a Hellenic League Premier Division club with a point after a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Tuffley Rovers tonight, with the visitors ending the contest with 10 men.

Following a goalless first half, Josh Morse fired the reigning Division One West champions ahead just after the hour mark, converting from Jason Milhench’s cross.

However, Fairford were soon pegged back when goalkeeper Josh Langley was caught out by a deep cross from Tuffley’s Warren Mann, which cannoned in off the post to level the scores.

There was a bitter taste to the final few minutes of the first competitive game for the new Town management team of Chris Smith and Jody Bevan as debutant Liam Gayle was given his marching orders for a reckless challenge, however, their side clung on to give them the consolation of a point to travel home with.

Highworth Town bettered that result by claiming all three points in a stunning 4-2 success away at Lydney Town.

An own goal gave Jeff Roberts’ side the early lead before Pete Macklin restored parity for the home team.

The Worthians got their noses back in front just before the break when Josh Slocombe hit the back of the net and Ashley Edenborough got their third 10 minutes after the restart.

Kius Bonner-Shea then got in on the act to put Highworth 4-1 up in the closing stages and although Macklin got his second for Lydney in stoppage time, there was no denying the visitors their victory.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town begin their Premier Division campaign tomorrow when they travel to Brackley Town Saints.
