ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town manager Rich Hunter is hoping to kick-on their season after claiming their first win on Tuesday, starting tonight with the visit of local rivals Fairford Town in the FA Vase.

A first-half Sam Packer strike against Brackley Town Saints was enough to secure Bassett a first win of the campaign, having only gathered three points from their opening seven games prior to that.

However, with that monkey of the side’s back, Hunter is looking to start the season afresh and believes the next win will not be long in the offing if they continue to defend like they did on Tuesday.

“It was a really pleasing result,” he said. “It was a good performance throughout. We had to ride our luck at times but we defended really well and we were good going forward.

“If I was being picky, we would have liked to have wrapped the game up a bit earlier.

“Only scoring the one, it always gave them a slight chance of getting back into it.

“In the end, we really deserved the win and it’s great to get those three points and it kick starts the season and gives us a platform to move on from now.”

Hunter will now be looking to secure that second win tonight when Jody Bevan’s Fairford Town arrive.

The Cinder Lane club have also struggled, having stepped up from Division One West last season, without a win to their name yet, and Hunter is anticipating an exciting affair.

“It’s a massive game for the club,” he added. “It’s a Friday night, so hopefully we draw a bit of a crowd in and all our attentions now turn to that game.

“It’s going to be a bit of a buzz, being a derby, and it will only add to the occasion and it promises to be a good game.

“Whenever you look at the season, you always want to do well in the Vase and with a couple of nice draws, you can get through a few rounds.

“We certainly want to progress and do well in that competition, so it is a must-win game for us.”

Meanwhile, Highworth Town and New College Swindon host Easington Sports and Ampthill Town respectively in the Vase, with Shrivenham in league action at home to Headington Amateurs.
