ZAK Westlake’s first half strike was enough for Swindon Supermarine to edge past Barnstaple Town in the FA Trophy preliminary round.

Manager Dave Webb was particularly pleased with the way his side were able to grind out a win, after losing two cup games in succession.

The first came last Saturday where they were beaten 3-2 by Paulton Rovers in the FA Cup, whereas in their last outing they were defeat 3-0 at the hands of Kidlington in the Challenge Cup four days later.

“Any win was a good win and that is exactly what we got,” he said

“In the first five minutes we didn’t really start that well, then we found our feet, played some good stuff and they only thing I can be critical of is we lacked a bit of quality in the final third.

“Not just in front of goal, but our crossing and our passing too.

“That let us down and probably why we didn’t score more goals.

“But in terms of defending properly, the effort, organisation and application from the players that can’t really be faulted.

“After going out of the FA Cup the way we did last Saturday, it was important that we won so I’m over the moon we have progressed to the next round.”

Before those results, Supermarine had enjoyed an unbeaten run of 11 games in which they conceded four times and Webb believes it is crucial his side remain defensively strong as they look to get back on track.

“We talked about defending in a meeting before the game and our success this season has been built on a sound foundation at the back,” he added.

“We only conceded four goals in over 10 games, then we conceded six goals in two games last week so to go back to a clean sheet today was really important.

“The back four were excellent and they deserved their clean sheet, although we didn’t really look like we were going to be in danger.

“You never know what could happen at 1-0, and if they’ have equalised the replay would have been on Tuesday so I’m just happy we won the game.”

Webb’s troops will hosts Southern League East side Hartley Wintney in the first qualifying round of the trophy on Saturday, October 28.
