Highworth Town must become more clinical up front should they wish to make an impression on this season’s Hellenic Premier Division table.
The stark message, delivered by manager Dave Webb, came in wake of the Worthians third defeat of the season at Wootton Bassett Town yesterday - a 2-0 loss in a game they had enough opportunities to win, according to Webb.
Now the Rec team’s boss wants his outfit to develop a cutting edge as they aim to impose themselves on what has been a topsy-turvy division thus far this term.
“We had enough chances to have got the result we wanted, and you can’t miss as many opportunities as that and expect to win football matches,” said Webb.
“We are all very disappointed. There were a lot of people out there to watch us today, and a lot of people expecting us to win, and we didn’t.
“We are all a little down this evening after what has happened.”
The reverse followed two other early-season defeats - against Slimbridge and Ardley United - which, for a side predicted to be challenging for honours at the top end of the league, has certainly been a shock to the system.
But with plenty of time to resurrect their campaign, and with a fortnight’s break until their next league engagement, Webb expects his players to dig themselves out of the small hole they currently occupy.
And in the meantime the Highworth chief has issued those clubs, Bassett included, who have defied expectations with their strong starts, to maintain their lofty positions, saying the embryonic table may bear no resemblance to its equivalent at the turn of the year.
“I wasn’t too displeased with the performance, but we need to start getting results,” he said.
“Obviously we now don’t have a league game for two weeks which means we can’t fix the problem by going and getting three points, but we can concentrate on the cups and get back to winning ways.
“The players are fully aware of what is expected, but there have been a lot of surprising results so far.
“A lot of points have been dropped by some of the teams who were up there last year and a lot of the promoted sides have had excellent starts.
“They’ve come into the league relaxed and have adapted.
“It’s up to them now to keep their runs going and for the teams already in this league to start beating them.”
