THERE’S no stopping the Wootton Bassett bandwagon at present.
Four games into their return to the Hellenic League’s top tier and Dave Turner’s side remain unbeaten, with yesterday’s 2-0 derby win against Highworth the latest in a series of remarkable results for the newly-promoted team.
Bassett boss Turner is loving every second of the adventure, and heaped praise on his youthful squad following victory over the Worthians.
“I can’t fault my players at all, their attitude has been excellent and they have been reaping the results,” he said.
“My job was easy for this game as they had all the motivation they need from some of the rivalry with Highworth being a derby game, and they went out there and did everything they needed to do.
“They may be a group of young players but they’re playing with maturity.
“Some people would say that they are playing above their level, but they’ve been bright and committed and it’s been great to watch.”
Liam Edmonson’s scrambled effort, coupled with John Beeden’s penalty, settled matters for the Rylands Way side, who have won three of their first four fixtures since arriving back in the Hellenic Premier.
In that time, Turner has witnessed his strikers bag 14 goals, whilst his miserly defence has leaked just two - the perfect combination for a successful football team.
And although the Bassett manager knows such eccentric success cannot last forever, he knows his players will work their utmost to prolong the positive run for as long as possible.
“We know there are going to be sticky times and it can’t always be like this,” he said.
“But these lads have worked hard to get themselves into this league and they will continue to work hard to stay in it.
“We’ve managed clean sheets and goals and everything is looking good. In honesty, we never thought everything would fall into place like this.
“I’m over the moon, as is everybody involved with the club.”
Banks opened the scoring for the hosts when he bundled Shaun Carter’s centre into the Highworth net, but it took Phil Tearle’s felling in the box to put the game to bed - Beeden slotting home from 12 yards.
And it all came as something of a shock to Turner.
“Before this season started we would not have expected to beat teams like Highworth Town,” he said.
“But in the end it could have been more.
“We’ve had one disallowed and played superbly.
“I can’t praise my players enough.”
