Highworth Town boss Dave Webb was impressed with his team’s performance in their 4-1 away win at Wantage Town, but insisted the scoreline flattered his side.
Striker Josh Parsons fired two goals in the first half to give Highworth the lead at the break, before Craig Curtis and Rory Sproule netted after the interval to make the game safe.
Webb was happy to see his side take their chances, but admitted the result could have been different.
“We knew it would be a tough game, and although it reads 4-1, I think the result flatters us a little bit,” he said.
“We created a lot of chances, but for long spells, especially in the first half, Wantage were the better side. We were 2-1 up at half time but had been under a fair bit of pressure, but you have to be happy doing that at the champions.”
The victory came in Highworth’s first game in a fortnight due to a lack of scheduled fixtures, and Webb admitted the break from competitive action had played a part in his side’s sluggish start.
“It does affect you having such a long break because we lost a little bit of match fitness, and I think in the first half that showed a little bit. But if we can win games like this after a break then that is really a good sign.”
Fairford went down 4-1 for the second week in a row, this time at the hands of play-off chasing Binfield.
It was always going to be a tough afternoon for Paul Braithwaite’s side, as Callum Whitty picked himself up after being fouled in the box, and tucked away the resulting penalty.
Binfield took control of the match in the early stages of the second half as Jos Millar capped his debut with a fine goal, chipping into the top corner from 20 yards.
Stuart Tanfield scored two quick goals to put the game beyond doubt, before Fairford grabbed one back which only proved a consolation. Elsewhere in the division Shrivenham went down 2-1 at home to Thame United.
Wootton Bassett manager Dave Turner admitted his sides chances of winning promotion from Division One West were all but gone after a 0-0 draw at Old Woodstock Town.
Despite the result, Turner was pleased with his side’s performance in a game where they were missing five first team regulars.
“I am proud as punch,” the Bassett boss told the Advertiser. “The lads played very well and I have nothing but praise for them. Woodstock hit the post twice and we missed two good one on one chances, but if anyone was going to steal it I think it would have been us.
“We probably did need the win, and the reality is we are not going to be able to finish in the top three. So now we have a good chance to look at our younger players before next season so we are not going into it blind.”
Elsewhere in the division, New College Swindon drew 2-2 at Clanfield, and Cricklade Town lost 5-0 at Hook Norton.
