NEW Supermarine boss Dave Webb has targeted the Southern League Division One South & West title within two seasons as he bids for a swift journey to step three football.

Marine were relegated from the Southern Premier in 2011/12 and Webb, who won the Wilts Senior Cup and the Hellenic League Challenge Cup during four seasons at Highworth, has been brought in to revive the South Marston side’s fortunes.

And while he admits it will not be easy for Marine to bounce back, Webb says a title win by 2013/14 is a realistic possibility.

“Division One South & West is a very competitive league and there’s some good teams in there. It’s certainly not a foregone conclusion how well we’re going to do,” he said.

“But when the club spoke to me on Monday night their enthusiasm was unbelievable and they are so determined to get up (to the Southern Premier) again.

“With the players we’ve got, we’ve got to try and get into the top six or be near it next season, but certainly the year after we’ve got to be looking to win the league. There’s no reason why we can’t do that.”

Webb’s initial task will be to find out which members of his squad are willing to stay on next season, and then make plans as to whether a recruitment drive is needed.

The Marine boss will inevitably be linked with moves for players at former club Highworth but he revealed that the possibility was not at the forefront of his mind.

“It’s too early to say what players will be targeted - there’s a lot of good players there already and we need to see if they want to be part of what we’re trying to do,” said Webb.

“I’ve got to speak to all the players together with Lee (Spalding, assistant) and Gary (Horgan, former joint boss and potential new first-team coach) and we’ll work out what the plan is going to be.

“We will try to put a team together that’s going to be competitive in this league, and I’m confident we can do that.”

Webb added that he would be making personal calls to all of his players at Highworth, thanking them for their efforts during his time at the Elms.

“I’ll thank them for everything they have done, every single one of them has been a credit,” he said.

Horgan was last night due to meet Webb and is expected to take on a coaching role alongside Spalding.
