McNally returns to Shrivenham as boss

NEW Shrivenham boss Michael McNally could not pass up the chance to return to manage the club where he enjoyed success in his playing days.

McNally has been appointed as the man to replace John Fisher at The Rec, and is a former player for the club having won promotion to the Hellenic Premier under Alan Dyton in 2005.

The 38-year-old spent part of last season managing at Lambourn Sports in Hellenic League Division One East, his first job in management, but after the leaving the club midway through the campaign was looking forward to a break from football.

But when the Shrivvy job became available he found it hard to turn down, and now can’t wait for the new season to come around.

“It is a great opportunity and a great club to come back to,” he told the Advertiser.

“I played for Shrivenham for a few years and enjoyed a lot of success with the club, and it is great to be back as manager.

“When I left Lambourn I was looking forward to a nice break from football really, but when I was offered this chance I couldn’t say no.

“I have spoken to a couple of the lads who were at the club last season to see what it is all about and how things are, and I told them about what I wanted to do here, so now I can not wait to get going.”

McNally will be bringing in former Swindon Town midfielder Ben Worrall to help with pre-season, and is hoping to attract some new players to the club.

“We want the club to be an established club in the league, and to bring through some good players which I hope Ben’s presence will help to attract,” he said.

“Training will be fun here and I think the first thing is that we want the players to enjoy themselves.

“I am very enthusiastic and I hope that will rub off on others, and I like to get the best out of my players.”

Outgoing chairman Robb Forty was pleased with the man appointed to replace Fisher, and backed him to succeed.

“He knows the club and he knows what we are all about, and that is very important,” he said.

“He will be a very steady influence on everyone at the club, and that is what we need at this moment.

“Michael also has a lot of good contacts in the area and I think that will help us attract some new players to the club.”

Vice-chairman Neil Sutton played a key role in bringing McNally back to the club, and is certain he will do a good job.

“We met with him on Friday night to chat things through and talk about his plans and he spoke very positively, and that is exactly what we are looking for.

“He has a good footballing pedigree having played for the likes of Newbury, Burnham and Slough and I know he will do well.

“There is no massive pressure on him for next season and no huge targets, we just want to stay up and then push to build for the future.”
