A FIELD of around 50 juniors took part in the annual Wiltshire County Closed Junior Squash Championships.

Despite good performances from local boys Jonathan Jarjis, Ramsbury and Crofton Keyes, Burbage in the U11s and Theo Heber-Percy and George Popperwell (both St Johns), in the U13s, both finals were contested by Salisbury juniors with David Offer just edging out Ben Howgrave-Graham 2-1 in the U11 and Seb Horlock beating Ollie Brunton in the U13s 2-0.

The girls also followed a similar pattern with Ellie Osmond and Sophie Bolland being edged out by Tamsin Morgan and Millie Reeve from Salisbury.

In the U15 boys, Michael Galley was pushed to the wire in his semi final against Sam Nelson-Piercy.

Having made the final he came up against No 1 seed Michael Mellor (South Marston), who always had too much quality winning 3-0.

The U15s girls final was a more evenly-matched contest with Lauren Doble, also from South Marston, being asked to work hard against Salisbury’s Lottie Bottomley. Doble eventually winning 3-1.

The most competitive field was undoubtedly the boys U17 category.

Wiltshire number one Calli Smith (South Marston), was pushed hard in his semi-final but he beat Joash Nelson-Piercy 2-0.

The same score in the other semi saw Millfield’s Cam Stratton beat Kieran Mellor.

Smith eased through his final to win 3-1.

The Under 19 age group also went to form and having earlier beaten Marlborough’s Jack Bryan, Josh Watkins (Wessex Squash Club), held his nerve to take his second title in as many years defeating Salisbury’s Matt McKinley 3-1.
