SWINDON’S indoor clubs recorded a mixed set of results last Sunday in the opening matches of their new campaigns in the East Region of the Wessex League.

Westlecot were always in overall control of their first match against Chipping Norton and ran-out comfortable 106-56 winners.

Swindon Manor, in their Wessex League opener, made a fine start against Banbury Cross and looked on course for a winning league debut.

However, they fell away in the second-half of the match and suffered a disappointing 100-71 loss.

After 10 ends, the two away Manor rinks, skipped by Mark Richman and Paul Cooper, combined to only trail by eight shots.

But this was compensated by the two home rinks skipped by Robbie Allen and Richard Young who led 14-11 and 11-5 respectively giving Manor an overall halfway lead over Banbury of 45-44.

However, it all went downhill in the second half as the two away rinks struggled and lost by 17 and nine shots while both home rinks were pegged back and passed and lost by a combined three shots.

Westlecot playing at home on their new blue carpet made a slow start in their match with Chipping Norton and only led 16-15 across the board after five ends but by ten had increased that to 47-28.

They moved 70-41 clear at 15 and 76-52 at 18 to finally win 106-56.

The two rinks skipped by Tom Walkley and Chris Cheesley produced storming finishes, scoring ten and nine shots each respectively and not conceding even a single to win by 11 and 12 shots.

Westlecot took the honours on all four rinks to collect a maximum 16 points - two points per winning rink and eight for overall victory - and make it a perfect start to a new indoor league season.
