WESTLECOT men’s and ladies teams recorded a mixed set of results in national inter-club championship Plate competitions last weekend.

The ladies had to pull-out all the stops to win their Yetton Plate derby with Swindon Manor ladies as they trailed 19-11 at five ends across the board and 31-29 at ten in this first competitive meeting between the two.

But between ends 11-15 Westlecot upped the tempo to move ahead 56-42 and never looked back to finally win by 18 shots and take the honours on all four rinks.

Janet Willis’ away rink at the Manor trailed Gloria Edwards’ quartet right up until the finish before snatching a two shot success 19-17. While alongside Babs Salter’s rink came from 8-3 down against Eileen Oliver to record a four shot success.

Westlecot ladies face Fairford today in round two.

MidGlos proved to be far too big a nut for Westlecot men to crack in the first round of the Denny Plate.

Westlecot men made a poor start, particularly away, where at five ends across the board they trailed 25-12 and never recovered to be 39-28 down at halfway and 60-37 at 15 ends before finally losing 88-50.

n THREE ladies from Westlecot were part of the the Wiltshire side that defeated Gloucestershire in the opening round of the Atherley Trophy.

In recent seasons Wiltshire have struggled against Gloucestershire but on this occasion the ladies produced a superb performance to win 142-104.

Westlecot’s Julia Hunt, Wendy Anderson and Linda Perfitt were all members of winning rinks against Gloucestershire.

In the second round of the Atherley Trophy Wiltshire have been drawn at home against Somerset.

n TWELVE, of the Wiltshire men’s that will face Hampshire today in the Liberty Trophy are members of the Westlecot Indoor club.

The dozen have been selected for the men’s first round inter-county championship match at Palmerston.

Paul Kistle, Mike Titcombe, Kevin Embling and Ian Jefferies are chosen as a rink as are James Nobbs, Craig Morphet, Chris Cheesley and team manager Neil Smith.

Meanwhile Kyle Anderson, Dave Snell, Tom Walkley and Dave Godwin complete the dozen.
