JAZZ Carlin admitted she had surpassed her own expectations after landing a silver medal in the women's 800m freestyle on the second day of the World Short Course Championships in Doha.
Carlin, 24, also secured herself a place in the national record books and a silver medal after lowering Rebecca Adlington's 2008 British mark to 8:08.16.
Carlin, who was beaten to the gold by world-record holder Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain, said: "For me short course is pretty tough, mentally I find it pretty tough because I know my turns are not the strongest part of my race.
"Coming into this meet I didn't really have high expectations but I gave it a go - my legs are sore - but coming away with a silver medal is a great way to end this year. I am very happy with that."
Carlin will bid for a second medal in this afternoon's 400m freestyle final after qualifying fifth fastest from this morning's heats in 4:01.37.
Belmonte Garcia again topped the timesheets with a 4:00.29 clocking.
