SWINDON Spitfires came needed extra time as they came from behind to clinch a 5-2 win over Downend Flyers in the South West Womens Football League’s Pat Sowden Cup.

The Spitfires got off to a bad start when a shot from the edge of the area went underneath stand-in keeper Emma Skinner after just a minute.

Downend doubled the lead in the ninth minute but on 42 minutes, Swindon’s Laura Stallard burst forward and was felled by the keeper, Sammie Smith slotting home the penalty.

On 71 minutes, Beth Turner and Suze Berry combined for Katie Wadey to make it 2-2.

Downend were reduced to 10 players via a sending off but the score was still level after 90 minutes.

Spitfires went ahead for the first time in extra time as Wadey lobbed the keeper then fired home again for her hat-trick.

With five minutes to go, Morgan Whitaker released Karyn Coombs, who wrapped up the victory.

Swindon Spitfires United returned to the top of the Wiltshire Women’s & Girls League’s Ladies Division with a 2-1 victory over Melksham Town Black.

United’s first goal came as Georgia Leonard’s beautifully-placed free kick on 27 minutes found captain Zofie Stepien who headed home.

The Melksham keeper made several good saves and, within the first minute of the second half, they found an equaliser with a long-range shot beating Shona Hanlon.

United got their reward four minutes from time as Claire Morton found Kristina Gough, who fired across to allow Dent to tap in.

Swindon Spitfires Development were left wondering how they lost 2-1 to Frome Town Reserves.

Dani Granato, Anna Higgins and Amy Mathews went close for Spitfires in the opening 10 minutes, but Frome broke the deadlock on 12 minutes. Spitfires drew level in the second half as combination play from Cara Costello and Hayley Shipp finished with Granato tavoiding several challenges before powering past the keeper to score her first goal in adult football.

On 75 minutes, Katrina Reynolds threaded a ball through to Amy Mathews who turned the last defender but shot just wide.

However, with 12 minutes left it was Frome who snatched the win.
