WILTSHIRE’S Under 12s girls tennis team produced a stunning performance at the AEGON County Cup National Finals last weekend, claiming a runners-up finish.
The boys team also qualified for the event in Bolton, finishing seventh.
The girls team beat Cambridgeshire 6-2, Warwickshire 6-2 and Surrey 5-4 to qualify for the overall final.
There, the team of Amelia Bissett (TeamBath/Devizes), Jessica Doerr (Next Generation Swindon), Ellen Jones (Next Generation Swindon) and Beatrice Watts (Devizes TC) lost to a strong Lancashire team 6-0.
The team were captained by Steve Yeardley, head coach at Next Generation Swindon, who said: “The girls were magnificent all weekend and competed brilliantly. To finish second was a fantastic achievement.”
The boys team of Oliver Martin (Team Bath), Edred Opie (Next Generation Swindon/Chippenham TC), Stanley Brown (Next Generation Swindon) and Rio Moss (Riverside TC, Salisbury) lost to Cheshire 6-2, Middlesex 8-0, West of Scotland 6-2 but beat Shropshire 5-4.
Captain Will Baillie, head coach at Devizes Tennis Club, said: “The boys showed great character and showed tremendous effort in every match.”
