SWINDON teenager Charlie Nesbitt had a mixed weekend in the latest round of the Honda Moto3 in Kent.

Claiming second and fifth in the two qualifying sessions on his Honda-powered machine with 0.2 seconds between him and the quickest efforts - the 14-year old earned his front row start for the first race of the weekend.

Nesbitt, aged 14, was boxed in at the start of race one and was in fourth place at the end of the first lap.

He kept a calm head and fought hard to overtake Spaniard Dani Saez for third on lap three, where he immediately pulled a gap on him and rapidly caught Scott Deroue.

Battling hard to claim second spot from Deroue, Nesbitt was just edged out at the line in an enthralling battle.

However, Nesbitt then had a day he would like to forget after he suffered with a crash in the final race of the weekend.

He got off to a good start and was in a group of five riders when he tried to make a move on Ed Rendell on the fifth corner to stay with the front runners, but unfortunately saw them come together and force the Swindon teenager off the track.

The bike barrel-rolled in the air and ended up over a fence, but Nesbitt walked away from the scene unhurt, leaving the championship’s fifth round in seventh position overall.

Nesbitt said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to the team who worked really hard on my bike on the run-up to the meeting and I managed to run in the top three in every session and qualified in second for race one.

“I ended the race in third but set the second fastest lap and my first podium of the year.

“I had a much better start (in the second race) but came together with Rendel going into Hawthorns that sent me straight into the air fencing. Thankfully, I got away with just bruising.”
