MATT Dickens claimed four tries as Swindon St George ran in a magnificent seven to sign off the season in style.

St George saved the best for last as they turned in their most stylish display of the campaign to power past Cheltenham Phoenix 38-18 at Supermarine. Captain Connor Tomley also touched down, as did Richard White and Adam Carter.

Sticking to their gameplan of playing front-foot, aggressive rugby, Swindon opened the scoring straight from the kick off as Tomley crossed in the first minute without a tackle being made.

Although Phoenix hit back midway through the first half to briefly snatch the lead, Swindon never looked in serious danger and by half time had built up a 22-12 advantage.

The second period continued in similar vein with the home side running in three more tries and the scoreline could have been even more emphatic by the time the final whistle sounded.

The game was somewhat overshadowed by some serious injuries to visiting players, resulting in two ambulances being called, although it was never a dirty game and the fact that Swindon were shown four yellow cards gave a misleading impression as the cautions were mainly for backchat and technical offences, rather than foul play.

Although the victory will not prevent St George finishing bottom of the West of England Premier table, team manager Jakob Kauusberg was delighted with the effort of his troops.

“It was a very pleasing result, we were over the moon to finish the season on a high. It was a good Cheltenham side that we were up against but we deserved to get the win,” said Kauusberg.

“The lads were all delighted. We all had a really good night out together afterwards. There is a strong team ethic here, it’s just a good bunch of mates who play hard for one another.

“Once we got to half time in front we were pretty comfortable and we could have scored a couple more tries before the end too.

“Matt (Dickens) is good player. He always puts in a good show when he comes down to play for us and we were all really pleased for him afterwards.

“Connor is only 18 but he was our captain this year and finished as our top points scorer for the season.”

St George’s only other win this season was a 42-16 success at home to Somerset Vikings back in May but Kauusberg says this latest success will give them a spring in their step as they build for the future.

“It’s a good benchmark for what we can do, especially with the new players we have brought in,” said Kauusberg.

“One of the things that really stood out for us is that we were the third highest scorers in the league but we conceded the most points.

“We have the ability to attack with the best teams but we need to work on our defensive structures.

“That’s it now for us, we are starting to encroach on the union season so a lot of the players will be going back to those clubs but there is a lot for us to focus on over the next few months to be ready for next year.”
