SWINDON and Prior Park foilist Edward Scott-Payne won bronze in the boys’ U11 Cardiff Leon Paul Fencing Series.

Scott-Payne had a strong pool round, finishing undefeated while seeing off a number of challengers 5-0.

This gave him an overall ranking of second from a total entry of almost 50 entries and his next contest was a comfortable 10-1 victory followed by a 10-2 win, taking him through to the last 16 where he dominated again, winning 10-3.

His quarter-final bout was a tense affair, but the Swindon youngster’s superiority in attack after defence saw him through 10-6.

The semi-final was a very tightly-fought contest, with Scott-Payne losing out on time 8-7 after six minutes of entertaining fencing.

Scott-Payne said: “I’m thrilled to win my first medal in six months and whilst I knew the competition would be strong, I felt I could push and get a good result."

Coach and president of Swindon Fencing Club Neil Bromley added: “Ed fenced superbly, taking his time when needed and using his strength of attacking immediately after making a parry defence.

“I’m incredibly proud of him and the other boys who he fences with at school and at Swindon.’’

Fellow Swindon fencers Ethan Teale and Charlie Robbins were sixth and seventh respectively.

Bromley added: “Charlie Robbins, Ed Scott-Payne and Ethan Teale are all great friends and encourage each other when competing, offering advice and support. I’m really encouraged by how they are progressing and look forward to them building on their performances.’’
