KELLY Morgan could be in line for an early Christmas present if she can land a fight with one of the top middleweights in the world.

The Swindon-based 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist has only had two fights since turning professional in the summer.

However, talks are already on-going with Szilvia Szabados, who is ranked the third best middleweight in the world by BoxRec.com, for Sunday, December 20, and Morgan’s trainer Richard Farnan is hoping that a deal can be struck for the show at the Grange Drive Leisure Centre.

“At the moment, (Morgan’s promoter) Keith (Mayo) is in talks with Szilvia’s camp and if a deal can be struck this is a great opportunity for Kelly,” Farnan said.

“Szilvia fought for a world title in the summer and whatever happens in the fight, it would be good for Kelly.

“If she wins, she could be closing in on a world title shot in the new year.”

Despite Szabados’ experience, Farnan is taking heart from the fact that the Hungarian was defeated by Melinda Lazar, who Morgan beat in October, in March.

But since that defeat to Lazar, Szabados has had six fights, with her only defeat coming in a WBC super-middleweight world title bout with Nikki Addler.

“I don’t believe that Szilvia will bring anything more to the table than Lazar did,” Farnan added.

“In fact, Lazar has a better amateur background, and Kelly beat her, so who knows what can happen.

“It will also be a chance for Kelly to fight someone at her own weight and someone her own size.”

Meanwhile, Farnan believes that Ben Heap is ready to unleash months of pent up frustration when he makes his debut next month.

The Chippenham-based former kick-boxing champion has finally been licenced by the British Boxing Board of Control – three months after he was originally set to make his debut.

And after a number of false dawns, the debutant middleweight is raring to go.

“Ben is with me twice a week, the hardest job I have is making sure he gets enough rest when he is away training,” Farnan said.

“There is a lot of frustration that has built up after being forced to wait for his debut and he’ll take it out on whoever he has to face.

“He has got his licence now and he just can’t wait to get started.”
