SWINDON and Hatherop Castle School foilist Ben Turner won his first school tournament in London in memorable fashion.

Turner got off to a flying start, winning his first bout 5-0 before losing his second 5-4 and his third 2-1 to the boy he would eventually meet in the final before his last group fight was another 5-0 success, putting him into the last 16.

The youngster comfortably eased to a 10-2 victory to book his place in the semi-final against the top seed.

In the semi-final, Turner took time in attack and defended superbly to build up a three-point lead at the first break.

However, his opponent came back in the second to lead 9-8. If another hit had been scored against the Hatherop pupil, then his day was over.

Turner dug deep to score next to level at 9-9 with a single light in his favour.

So the fight was decided on sword point or sudden death, which he won with an excellent parry riposte.

In the final, Turner started strongly and was leading 8-3 at the end of the first period, varying his blade strokes nicely to cause confusion and take his opponent off guard.

After the break, his opponent came back strongly, scoring five unanswered points, drawing 8-8, but Turner found his focus again and scored the final two points with no answer from his adversary to become champion for the first time.
