The #SquashGirlsCan campaign took to Wiltshire at the weekend, with an incredible 54 players from across the region taking part in a junior girls squash festival.

Taking place at Mecure Swindon South Marston Hotel & Spa, the event catered for U15 girls of mostly either improver or beginner standard, with the youngest - Hampshire's Hattie Broadbridge - just six-years-old.

Funded by The Squash & Racketball Foundation (SRF), the day will be supported by follow on coaching sessions provided for girls in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Dorset.

The format of the day promoted a competitive but social environment. The first session ran as a three-quarter court graded format.

In the afternoon, players competed in a round robin within the group which they finished in at the end of the morning session. Players were invited to sample the swimming and spa facilities at the end of the day.

Dax Mellor, the event organiser, commented: “It’s important to provide opportunities such as these.

"Girls especially enjoy the social side of squash and it was wonderful to see so many of them, across all age groups and abilities, having so much fun.

"Squash and competition are at the core of these events, but we shouldn’t lose sight that we are aiming to provide a positive experience and having an element of fun at our festivals and fixtures is crucial in keeping our juniors, and particularly girls, engaged in our sport.

"The day will probably be best remembered as ‘lunch and a spa’ with a few hours of squash thrown in either side.”
