CHARLIE Shotton-Gale led the charge as four Swindon Barbell competitors claimed medals at the British Powerlifting Championships.

Club head coach Shotton-Gale, competing in the championships for a ninth time, was hoping to break a couple of her existing British records and ended up setting four new marks.

A 215k squat helped her add 2.5kgs to her record and she went on to add 5kgs to her bench record, increasing it to 137.5k and 2.5kgs to her deadlift record to 202.5k.

Her nine out of nine successful lifts increased her personal best total and the record by 15kgs, to 555kgs, in the -84kgs female seniors (23-39) category and earned her a sixth British title.

University of Bristol student Christie Civetta, originally from New York, achieved a 190kgs squat, 107.5kgs bench and 172.5kgs deadlift to add 25kgs to her personal best total for a bronze medal in the same category.

Bracknell’s Yasmina Couty picked up a silver medal after entering as a practice run for technical changes she has been making in training.

She achieved a massive 5kgs personal best on her squat and 2.5kgs on her deadlift, giving her the second highest total in the -63kgs ladies class.

In the -84kgs Masters category, Helen Toms missed her opening two squats before a successful lift, moving on to the bench in which she managed a 5kgs personal best, a feat she repeated in the deadlift to claim silver.

The 51-year-old represented Great Britain at the IPF World Powerlifting Championship last year, winning silver medals in all three lifts.

Swindon Barbell, who have sponsorship from Mike McGuire family butchers in Havelock Street, will take members to the British Masters Championships and the South West Championships, while former Supermarine Ladies RFC player Shotton-Gale has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Powerlifting Championships in May, aiming to improve her previous achievement of bronze.
