THREE members of Swindon Fencing Club travelled to Wales for the Cardiff arm of the Leon Paul Junior Series competition at the weekend, all three coming home with medals in the Épée discipline.

Noah Gauger competed in the under 15 category.

Due to numbers, the first round was a mixed gender format where he won four out of six bouts.

This placed him third before the boys’ direct elimination round, where he needed a focused performance to win his semi-final.

In the final, Gauger was able to see off numerous attacks from his opponent, the current Leon Paul number one ranked fencer, and managed a well-earned 15-11 point win to earn the gold medal.

Eddie Scott-Payne, in his first ever Épée competition, won his first two fights against older and more experienced fencers and then lost against two of the top ranked fencers in the country.

He fought back in his next three fights and clinched a bronze medal.

In the under 11's, Cador Beautyman lost only two of his 16 fights during the day.

Defeat in the semi final to a Welsh opponent sent Beautyman home with the bronze medal, keeping him at the top of the Leon Paul national under 11 épée rankings.

The trio train with Swindon Silver Blades, the junior section of Swindon Fencing Club that meet at the Oasis Leisure Centre on Tuesday evenings.
