THERE was fencing success at this year’s British Youth Championships for three of the younger members of Swindon Fencing Club.

In their first visit to a British Championships event, Elloise McConnell and Cador Beautyman both came home with bronze medals.

In the Under 10 girls foil, Elloise won eight of her nine poule fights to be ranked fourth going into the direct elimination rounds.

After a comfortable win in her first knockout fight, the next two rounds were much closer, but McConnell went on to win both 10 points to seven before finally being defeated 10-5 in the semi-final.

Beautyman’s bronze was secured in the Under 10 boys epee event.

He had a fantastic start, winning all six of his poule fights to be ranked second overall going into the elimination rounds and earning him a bye into the round of 32.

Progressing through three rounds, he was then knocked out 10-9 in a close semi-final.

Ed Scott-Payne qualified for both the Under 12 Epee and Foil competitions, finishing 11th in the Epee event.

In the foil, he progressed well through the poule round and got through several elimination contests beforelosing in the quarter-final to finish seventh.

The placings meant the trio will automatically qualify for next year’s British Championships, without the need to go through regional qualification events.
