WILTSHIRE swimmer Stephanie Millward qualified third fastest into tonight's S8 women's 400m freestyle final as competition at the Paralympics got under way in Rio today.

Corsham's Millward, who could tackle up to seven events in the Games over the next 12 days, clocked 4:59.95 to finish second behind the United States' Jessica Long in the second of two heats in the pool this lunchtime.

The 34 year old finished comfortable clear in second spot as Long coasted home out in front and looks set to contest the medals in this evening's final alongside Long and Australia's Lakeisha Patterson, the winner of the first heat.

There was disappointment for Trowbridge's Aaron Moores in the men's S14 100m backstroke as he clocked 1:07.36 to finish fifth in his heat and 10th overall, not enough to reach tonight's final.

Millward's final is schedule for around 9.55pm this evening.
