SWINDON Shock had a weekend of mixed fortunes as they recorded a win on the opening day of the regular season, but lost to Cardiff City in the National Cup.

David Colclough’s team claimed their first points of the regular season when they edged the Exeter Eagles 67-64.

New addition Spencer Wells grabbed the lion’s share of the points, with 33, to leave Colclough pleased with how his team played in their first match in Division Four.

“Out of our 12 players, eight of us went to Exeter and we did really well. We started strongly but their home court and crowd got them back into the game.

“They had a bit of momentum but you could see our leadership step up towards the end and hang on for a win.

“Everyone was working really well together, we were moving it well but when they started to make their run, we started playing individually.”

After initially leading by thirteen points at the halfway stage, Shock found themselves going into the final quarter one point behind due to a half court buzzer beater at the end of the third.

However, Colclough’s men were up to the challenge as they were able to grind out a three point win, tallying their first two points in the process.

“Every time they scored we answered back, which is how we played for the last three minutes to get the win,” added Colclough “It is something that wouldn’t have happened last year it would have been more of a panic and we’d let games get away from us.

Their run in the National Cup then came to an end on the Sunday when they were beaten 66-62 by the hosts Cardiff.

Shock were due to play Bristol Flyers next weekend, but they have pulled out of the league.
