THE end of Max Cook’s Moto3 season did not go to plan as he sustained a serious injury to bring the curtain down on his campaign.

The 13-year-old had secured an eighth-placed finish in race one at Brands Hatch to add a further eight points to his overall tally but his second race came to an abrupt end.

The Swindon rider looked set to secure another hefty points haul before coming off his bike and breaking his wrist in the process.

Cook was in reflective mood following the accident, having got caught out by a wet track that will rule him out of action for a couple of weeks.

“They say you have to experience the lows of racing to appreciate the highs but it has been a big, big low,” he said.

“The second race started well. When the leaders fell early in the race, our group was fighting for third.

“I was beginning to push through the group when I went slightly off-line and hit a wet patch around Druid's, which high-sided me off the bike.

“Unfortunately, I broke my wrist in the crash, so I’m out of action for two-to-three weeks.”

Cook has shown impressive form in his development year in the British Superbikes support series and his final race tally saw him finish the season in ninth place on 129 points.

However, his wrist injury prevented him competing in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Selection event in Guadix Spain.

Last year, Cook was the youngest rider in the Red Bull field as he made the final 16 and was invited back for a second consecutive year.

The young rider has been denied his chance to compete against 117 riders from 32 countries, and the opportunity to ride the KTM RC 250 R Moto3 bike in the 2017 Red Bull Rookies Cup across 13 European circuits.

“Even more upsetting is I can no longer take part in the Red Bull Rookies try-outs,” added Cook.

“It’s a shame the season ended this way but the season as a whole has been amazing and to finish ninth in the open championship in my rookie year is awesome.”
