LOUISE Hunt will be looking to end 2016 on a high when she heads for the Bath Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament next week.

The Paralympian, from Wanborough, heads to her old university for the for the end-of-season event starting on Tuesday, November 15, and will be joined by fellow Rio participant Lucy Shuker, who claimed a bronze medal in South America.

Hunt, who gained a Foundation Degree in Sports Performance from the University of Bath in 2012, will be returning to familiar ground as she aims for success in the ITF 1-graded tournament on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

“This will be my last tournament of the year, so I’m looking to finish 2016 on a high,” said Hunt.

“I’m really excited to be playing a tournament in Bath this year. It’s my first UK event post-Rio, so it’ll be nice to be back on home soil – especially at my University. I always loved attending there and it will be great to compete somewhere I know so well.”

Shuker and Hunt will form part of a strong women’s draw, which features Paralympic doubles champion and singles silver medallist and world number two Aniek Van Koot, from the Netherlands, and Paralympic doubles silver medallist and French Open champion Marjolein Buis.

Hunt will head to Bath after reaching the women’s double final at the UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters in Mission Viejo, California, last weekend.

Playing alongside American partner Dana Mathewson, they beat the second seeds Katharina Kruger and Michaela Spaanstra in their round robin matches to ensure they would avoid meeting top seeds Shuker and Diede de Groot in the semi-finals, with both Brits and their partners topping their pools.

Both partnerships won their semi-finals in straight sets as Shuker reached her fourth final and Hunt her second.

After splitting two close sets in the final, the deciding set saw the momentum shift both ways, Hunt and Mathewson stringing together four games in a row to lead 4-2. However, Shuker and de Groot edged the last four games to wrap up a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

“I’m incredibly disappointed that we didn’t win the final because it was so close and it felt like there were just a few points in it,” added Hunt.

“Obviously, I’m pleased that we managed to beat our seeding and it was as an absolute privilege to play with a great player and one of my best friends."
