WHEELCHAIR basketball player Ben Fox was pleased with his performance after claiming gold his debut with Great Britain’s senior side at the PaPa Championships.

During the tournament in Belgium, Fox and his GB teammates came up against the Netherlands, Australia, Spain and Japan over the course of the Easter weekend.

Fox was one of two new additions to the squad, alongside Tom Smith, who were able to record four straight wins.

The 21-year-old, from Westlea, was only invited to take part in a training camp with GB last month following a good National League Premier Division campaign with Sheffield Steelers.

“It was an amazing experience which was really fun to be a part of. It was hard, but more fun than anything,” said Fox.

“We went four for four which was good. The guys played really well and we tried lots of different things, most of them worked which was good.

“I didn’t expect to be included in the squad for the tournament while I was at camp a few weeks ago.”

While the former New College student didn’t get as many minutes on the court as he is used to, he admits he has taken plenty form his firs senior outing.

“It’s been a great learning experience. I got a bit of game time but obviously being a new player I was almost a rookie,” added the 21-year-old, who was playing for Swindon Shock last season. “I was never going to get game time like I would when I play in England. But I got good minutes and managed to score my first points for the team.

“I’d like to think I am capable of playing at that level regularly. I just need to keep training and see where it goes from there.

“Some of the world’s best players were there. I learned lots of little tips on how to get the better of your opponent and how to read the game as well.”

Fox will now turn his attention back to his domestic campaign with the Sheffield Steelers, who have three games left of the season before embarking on the play-offs and he thinks it will be a welcome distraction for him as he waits to discover if he has been selected for the Junior World Championships in Toronto.
