HEAD coach Ben Whincup was left feeling frustrated after Swindon St George had their home tie with Southampton cancelled after the visitors were unable to raise a side.

While the South West Rugby League West of England Pool Two side were handed a 24-0 home win, which sees them remain at the top of the table by four points, the Swindon boss was hoping his troops could maintain their current momentum with another win on their own terms.

“It was a bit annoying because we were trying to build momentum going into the finals in a couple of weeks’ time,” he said “Hopefully it won’t have affected the boys too much and we can pick up where we left off. We just wanted to keep going and push on week on week if we could.”

Despite the first team being out of action, it did allow Whincup to run the rule over the club’s second team, who claimed a 52-42 home win over Forest Bulldogs.

That game also saw one of the visiting players taken to hospital following a nasty clash of heads during the contest.

However, the Swindon chief was most pleased with the togetherness shown by both the first and second team.

“It was a good strong performance from the second team players, it was nice to see them get a result at the end of the season,” said Whincup.

“It’s important that the second team do well because they’re a foundation for us to build on. If you have a strong second team, you will have a strong first team.

“There was a bit of a nasty head clash. He went to hospital but he’s been released and is all okay by the sound of it.

“I didn’t see it happen, I just saw him on the floor afterwards.

“It is nice to see the first team keep an eye on what the second team do because we are all one club.

“It’s great to see who is performing for them and then it keeps them in my mind when I am choosing my squads.

“We have players who have played for both teams throughout the season so it is nice to see everyone coming together.

“Hopefully they will do the same for us in the next few weeks.”
