The Pinewood School fencing team have continued their run of success after they took a bronze medal home from recent national championships.

The Shrivenham school entered a team in the boys U11 British Team Foil Championships, held at Millfield School’s Fencing Centre.

The prestigious event runs on a relay system, where each member of a three-man team fences the three members of their opposing team, the winning team being the first to reach 45 hits or be ahead after nine minutes of fencing.

Pinewood was represented by the quartet of Zac Fitzgerald, Ben Turner, Randeep Grewal and Tom Jarvis, which allowed the squad to use a rotation policy if any injury was sustained.

After the qualifying rounds Pinewood were seeded fourth and through to the direct elimination stage. A commanding performance by Turner, who scored 27 hits and conceded just six points, nudged Pinewood ahead and into the semi-final, where they eventually bowed out.

Fencing coach Neil Bromley said: “This is an excellent result from a young group of fencers.

“They gelled well as a team and supported each other throughout the day.

“I was especially impressed with how they offered each other tactics that they found worked against the different teams they faced.

“With fencing continuing to rise in popularity as a sport, I believe it is only a matter of time before we see even more impressive results from these boys.”

Pinewood’s director of sport James Siebert added: With more competitions on the horizon, I will be looking out to see how they perform both as a team and when competing individually.’’
