LEON Clements has followed in the footsteps of his father David after earning a black belt in taekwondo.

The 13-year-old, from Wroughton, is a member of the Phoenix Family Taekwondo, who train at the Phoenix Martial Arts & Fitness Studio at Transfer Bridge Industrial Estate, and following his recent grading, the Clements are the first father and son black belt duo at the club.

Leon handled the disappointment of not quite making the grade at his last attempt, returning six months later after dedicating himself to training and showing great perseverance.

Chief instructor John Newman said: “Leon is an inspiration to all of the students at Phoenix Martial Arts & Fitness.

“His determination to succeed, and the example he sets to all of those around him, makes him an invaluable member of our club.

“In our organisation, black belts are not simply given away, and the way Leon handled his disappointment at the last grading by throwing everything at training is very impressive, and shows the indomitable spirit required to be a true black belt.”

Phoenix Martial Arts & Fitness have classes for all the family, with children’s classes from four years old, family taekwondo, and adult kickboxing, as well as a range of fitness classes at its full-time studio, with free taster sessions available.
