FORWARD Chloe Lewis scored two fine goals as Swindon won 2-1 at Gloucester 2 to stay top of Premier Division 2A.

Swindon travelled to Gloucester without their usual goalkeeper so Lynsey Wall stepped up and donned the keeper’s kit.

The visitors started the match on the front foot, and in the 17th minute Julie Russell made a superb pass to Lewis.

She skilfully took on two Gloucester defenders and fired the ball across to Adriana Boullosa who smashed it back to the far post for Lewis to deflect into the net.

Minutes before half-time, Gloucester 2 were awarded a short corner which Mary Goldsmith expertly saved off the line.

Gloucester had Swindon rattled for the first 15 minutes of the second half. But an interception by Shona O’Dwyer led to fine play between Gemma Scrase and Boullosa, who again found Lewis in the D, and she neatly took it around the keeper and slotted home for what proved the decisive second goal.

Swindon allowed Gloucester a consolation goal late on, but they go into the Christmas break top of Premier 2A, a point ahead of Team Bath Buccaneers 2.

Swindon’s men paid the price for being able to take only 11 players to their top-of-the-table Conference North match at leaders West Wilts, and they were beaten 4-2.

Finding themselves two down within 15 minutes, Swindon battled back into the game with a goal from Thomas Lentschner.

A superb run from midfield and strike into the roof of the net from Tom Wickens brought the teams level by half-time.

However, in the second half the hosts were able to rotate the subs, and they grabbed two goals midway through the half to which Swindon had no answer as their players tired.

Swindon will hope to get back to winning ways this Saturday when they entertain Team Bath Buccs B.
