CRICKLADE rhythmic gymnast Laura Halford missed out on her first attempt to add another individual Commonwealth Games medal to her tally today after she finished fifth in the all-around final.

Swindon’s Stephani Sherlock was further down the order after finishing in 14th place.

Halford won three medals for Wales at the Glasgow Games four years ago – including a bronze in the all-around competition – but was off the podium on the Gold Coast.

The 22-year-old’s total score of 50.650 was less than a point off bronze medallist Kwan Dict Weng, of Malaysia. Cyprus’ Diamanto Evripidou won gold with a score of 55.750 ahead of Canadian Katherine Uchida.

Representing England, Sherlock posted a score of 41.400.

Halford still has three more chances to claim medals out in Australia when she goes in the individual finals of the hoop, ball and ribbon competitions on Friday.

There was another fifth-placed finish for Halford on Wednesday after Wales finished outside the medal places in the team competition.

Sherlock helped England to finish in sixth place as Cyprus won gold ahead of Malaysia and Australia.

Sherlock said: "There have been lots of ups and downs, fighting with injuries and I feel right now like there is a long way to go.

“I am just so grateful to everyone who has been there for me and helped push me and help me to push myself through the challenges.

"I am grateful for everyone’s support, especially my family and close friends because without them I wouldn’t be here – and thanks to my coaches as well.

“I just appreciate being here and it’s been an awfully long journey. It’s amazing.”
