BOWLS: Bassett and Westlecot in finals joy


THE TOP two local clubs Wootton Bassett and Westlecot are through to the area finals in two separate national competitions, writes DAVE EATON.

In the men’s Top Club competition Bassett have beaten Swindon 3-2, Westlecot 4-1, Rodbourne Cheney 5-0 but were pushed all the way by Spencer Moulton in their last match.

They clinched a win on the last end of the fours for a 3-2 victory and book an area final place at home to Dorchester tonight (6pm).

In the men’s Club Two Fours competition Westlecot B opened with a bye but then beat Wootton Bassett A 41-36, Swindon 46-31 and Westlecot A 42-22.

They sealed an away area final trip to Dorchester tomorrow night (Wednesday) with a big 47-18 victory over Chippenham Town.

The quartet of Kevin Embling, John Thomas, Ian Jefferies and Mike Jackson beat Neil Connor 25-11, while the rink of Mike Richards, Jamie Titcombe, Mel Biggs and Mark Dyer crushed Will Thomas 22-7.

  • COUNTY president Barry Wheeler’s representative side recorded a narrow victory over Middlesex in the friendly played on his own green at Swindon.

They took the honours on three out of the six rinks but Wheeler had to be content with a 20-20 draw in the clash of the presidents.

Their next match is away this coming Thursday at Welford on Avon against Warwickshire.

Rink 1: D Laws lost to E Prior 14-25; Rink 2: G Annetts beat T Howard 37-15; Rink 3: J Wilks lost to K Wilson 13-30; Rink 4: D Holland beat D Todd 23-15; Rink 5: C Borrows beat A Knott 22-18; Rink 6: R Hiles drew with B Elbourn 20-20.

Overall score: Wiltshire beat Middlesex 129- 123.
